0509 - a Small Punch Test Technique for Characterizing Pmma Used in Total Joint Replacement

ثبت نشده
چکیده

Introduction. Failure of the bone cement in a total joint replacement can lead to implant loosening and ultimately necessitate device revision. Establishing and maintaining the integrity of the polymethylmethacrylate (PMMA) bone cement is thus important to the long-term performance of cemented joint replacements. In particular, the fracture toughness or work to failure of the cement may play an important role. In this study, we applied a novel testing technique, the small punch or miniaturized disc bend test, to explore its utility in characterizing the elastic and fracture properties of PMMA. Because of its miniature specimen size, the small punch test provides an advantage over bulk mechanical testing methods that require large specimens. The small punch test has been used to measure ductility and fracture resistance of metals and ceramics [1], as well as the mechanical behavior of ductile polymers, including UHMWPE [2]. In the current study, we examined the effect of temperature on the elastic, yield, and fracture behavior of a generic PMMA and of Simplex-P bone cement.

Total Hip Replacement Revision in a Single Brand Small Cementless Stem – Our Experience after the Findings of the National Joint Registry

Background: Cementless total hip replacement is the common THR performed in England, Wales, Northern Irelandand the Isle of Man. The Corail stem is the most popular cementless implant and has a ODEP 10A rating. Review ofits performance in the registry identified an increase rate of revision amongst the smaller stem sizes. However, claritywas not provided on the explanation for this finding. We ...

Validation of the Small Punch Test Technique to Measure the Mechanical Properties of Acrylic Bone Cement

Introduction The main function of acrylic bone cement is to transfer loads from the prosthesis to the cancellous bone or increase the load carrying capacity of the surgical prosthesis. If the imposed stresses are greater than the load carrying capability, then cement fracture may occur resulting in failure of the joint replacement. The fracture of the cement mantle and subsequent premature loos...

The effect of Benson's relaxation technique on postoperative pain after total knee replacement in elder hospitalized patients in selected hospitals of kashan

Introduction: Pain is one of the most common problems in patients undergoing joint replacement. Except for medicinal treatments for pain relief, non-pharmacological methods of pain control, such as Benson's relaxation, cause more compromise with pain and reduce pain, fear and anxiety, and can tolerate it for the patient. The aim of this study was to determine the effect of Benson relaxation met...

Characterization of PEEK biomaterials using the small punch test.

The small punch test is widely used to characterize the ductility and fracture resistance in metals and ceramics, when only a small volume of material is available. This study was conducted to investigate the suitability of the small punch test for characterizing polyetheretherketone (PEEK) polymeric biomaterials for changes in material grade, crystallinity, and molding process. The small punch...

Small Punch Testing of Artificially Aged Gamma-Sterilized Polycarbonate Urethane Acetabular Components

INTRODUCTION: Polycarbonate urethane (PCU) has been investigated as a candidate bearing material for total acetabular replacement and unicondylar knee replacement [1-4], and is currently being used in a pliable acetabular component (AIC Acetabular Buffer: Active Implants Corp., Memphis, TN). However, the susceptibility of PCU to post-irradiation aging is not yet fully understood. Furthermore, d...
